On projects that I manage we are often amending the default CSS of SharePoint master pages to make things look a little better. I thought I would share the common tools that we use and also how to use these to get the CSS of pop-up menus and message boxes which aren’t always on the page to inspect. ... [More]

In SharePoint sites that have custom templates if you do not want to re-write the whole page you end up substituing certain elements for your nice looking design. In some cases elements that you remove or do not use may be referenced by JavaScript and removing these can cause errors on the page in the browser that you cannot resolve.... [More]

One of the biggest challenges that you will face when launching and rolling out an Intranet is stopping the intranet from sprawling. Ensuring the structure is maintained is a big job especially when users can create sites for collaboration or projects or customers. If you have customers and projects the engagements usually stick to a certain pattern and so does the files and information that is needed for that engagement.... [More]

Office365 is now out of Beta and can be purchased by anyone wishing to use the service. The service has some exciting potential and having used the Beta to create a SharePoint externally facing site there is a niche for the product for those organisations not wishing to spend a large amount of money on their own software and infrastructure.... I started by looking if I could replicate the look of this site on http://cloud.sharepointrescue.com , in the end the site didn’t give me the flexibility to do this but I thought that it would be useful to go through the features that can be used to design a simple site. Below is the ribbon that gives you all the options for designing your site.... [More]

I read a few posts about how to Tethering the Samsung Omnia 7, google will give you them, there was not one that worked for Three so here is how to do it on Three. BTW the guy in the shop actually said this was a feature of the phone when he was trying to sell me it, but admitted(once I challenged him) it may be a future one that they would definately allow. Three have all you can eat data so this is great and not against their T's and C's.... [More]

One feature that you may or may not be aware of is the ability for a Windows Phone to connect to a SharePoint Online site via the Office Hub. I thought this would be a bit more involved than it was sitting on the train late last night with nothing to do but it was very simple. Make sure you enter the https address of the SharePoint site and you get a nice sign-in screen where you enter your SharePoint online ID and password. Once signed it the site content is available for you to browse, the lists I got were... [More]

Following on from Part I where I showed how easy it was to setup a new Internet facing site I decided to go a bit further and get the site up and running on my own domain name. As I am not yet moving my whole site to SharePoint Online I setup up a subdomain http://cloud.sharepointrescue.com . This requires a bit of Admin knowledge, any business user will probably not have this knowledge or the access to do this. It is fairly straight forward but because of the nature of DNS propagation it seems a lot more difficult. So what are the steps you need to do?... [More]

If you haven’t signed up for the Beta of Office365 then I would strongly recommend that you do. Microsoft’s new cloud offering gives the very best of their Office 2010 suite and throws in a few extras such as Lync. Having used BPOS I think that Office365 is the right offering at the righ... [More]

I have had a few customers recently that have been looking at replacing Access Databases and have talked about connecting the database to SharePoint to retrieve the data. This may sound like a daunting task and as anyone that has used Microsoft Access in anger with a large amount of users knows it can be a nightmare to govern. Firstly lets look at the reasons that you may want to use Microsoft Access as a platform for Storing Data... [More]
