Following on from  a post I did a few months about Searching an external drive I thought I would explain very good feature that some of the SharePoint installs that I had come across were missing. My previous post explained how to hook up SharePoint Search to index a shared drive. Not only can ... [More]

I was trying to provide some navigation for users in the Search Centre and I found this solution that changes the default master page to one with top navigation. Took literally a minute for it to work. http://blog.drisgill.com/2010/09/converting-custom-sharepoint-2010.html Try it out for yourselves.... [More]

Being a project manager most of my time is spent communicating with clients – speaking to them, sending emails and also sending files. Clients often want to send me files, whether that is information about something, rough specs for work, or list of bugs outstanding.... [More]

There are a number of different considerations to take into account when using SharePoint Search in a SharePoint Farm. One of these is the Search Services that you are going to create. If there are some scopes that you want one site to use and not the other then you will need to create a second Search Service. For example, in a relatively small deployment you may have the Development Server on the same server as the Live Server.... [More]

I found a bit of an obvious feature of the Content Query Webpart that enables you to connect to a document library that is filtered with the same filter that you are using in this webpart. The new document centre feature of SharePoint 2010 enables documents to be filtered and search by Meta data that is associated with those documents. In the traditional business you may have departmental sites and document libraries for each department.... [More]

One niffy feature that I have found with the Enterprise Search is the ability to search an external drive that is shared as a network share. What is the fuss about you may ask? SharePoint 2007 also has this feature so nothing new in terms of SharePoint. What I have found is that one of the biggest obstacles to adoption is the phrase that a lot of users ask "What about all the files that I have stored in the file share?" ... [More]

I have setup SharePoint 2010 on my laptop to enable me to test projects that have been developed and to also do some development. There is a good guide on MSDN that details how to set this up. Ensure you read it and click all the links as I glossed over a few and then had to go back. Once the install is complete you can setup the home site and you're ready to go.... [More]

The people search in SharePoint 2007 is not very flexible and it often doesn't do what customers want it too. There is the custom development route but this is often costly and time consuming and with MOSS 2007 not an easy task to quantify. The second option is to hook into the existing people search using Javascript and a simple search box. ... [More]

As a project tool SharePoint is a great product, it enables all files to be kept in one place and for all the project team to use those files and collaborate on the project. One problem stopping user adoption which I have found to be an issue too, is the ability to upload files and edit files easily. No matter what your setup, if you use Office 2010 with SharePoint 2007 I find problems with permissions which can sometimes give multiple authentication boxes without actually working. This is where SharePoint Workspace 2010 comes in.... [More]

I have recently been investigating the options for Architecting SharePoint Servers for a few projects. I have come across a few sites and tools that may be of use to anyone in a similar position who is not typipically a SharePoint Architect. These days everything is virtual which is great for setting up server farms at a lower cost than would have traditionally have been possible. ... [More]
