SharePoint searching different sites in farm

There are a number of different considerations to take into account when using SharePoint Search in a SharePoint Farm. One of these is the Search Services that you are going to create. If there are some scopes that you want one site to use and not the other then you will need to create a second Search Service. For example, in a relatively small deployment you may have the Development Server on the same server as the Live Server. In this case you don't want users on the Live server searching content on the Development Server, and vice versa. This is a fairly straight forward process in Central Admin, once you have created a second Search Service Application go to Central Admin and choose the following options:-

 

  1. Select Application Management
  2. Select Configure service application associations, under Service Applications
  3. At this stage select the Web Application that you wish to change the search for it will look something like this:-

 

  1. Change the default dropdown to Custom and select the Search Application that you wish to use for this site.

     

     

That is it, the search application that you have configured will now be used for the Search centres that you create. If you have a request around this topic let me know and I will try and help you out.
